The dawn of a pandemic—as seen through the news and social media posts that vanished from China’s internet.
That day, a Wuhan doctor named Li Wenliang—a whistleblower who had raised alarms about the virus in late December, only to be reprimanded for “spreading rumors”—died of Covid-19.
Within hours, his death sparked a spectacular outpouring of collective grief on Chinese social media—an outpouring that was promptly snuffed out, post by post, minute by minute. With that, grief turned to wrath, and posts demanding freedom of speech erupted across China’s social media platforms as the night went on.
New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund will raise funds and organize and coordinate resources to fight the medical, social and economic impact of COVID-19 on New Jersey’s most vulnerable.

The crisis demanded a response that was swift, rational, and collective. The United States reacted instead like Pakistan or Belarus—like a country with shoddy infrastructure and a dysfunctional government whose leaders were too corrupt or stupid to head off mass suffering. The administration squandered two irretrievable months to prepare. From the president came willful blindness, scapegoating, boasts, and lies. From his mouthpieces, conspiracy theories and miracle cures. A few senators and corporate executives acted quickly—not to prevent the coming disaster, but to profit from it. When a government doctor tried to warn the public of the danger, the White House took the mic and politicized the message.
American officials were alarmed by fake text messages and social media posts that said President Trump was locking down the country. Experts see a convergence with Russian tactics.

The U.S. government’s inability — no, make that its refusal — to take charge of Covid-19 testing is a national disgrace, with profound consequences that will arrive soon. With pressure building to reopen the economy, the lack of meaningful testing means that states and their citizens are going to have to assume risks they can’t see.

There is hope with one new med previously intended for another disease – Ebola. Remdesivir (GS-5734, Nuc inhibitor).

After The Crisis
The U.S. government has significant experience in mobilizing for crises. What went wrong this time?
By Joe Nocera April 10, 2020, 6:00 AM EDT
Should’ve happened in January. Photographer: Angus Mordant/Bloomberg
administration should’ve done in late January was to mobilize the entire federal government. That it still hasn’t done so is both inexplicable and shocking.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should be overhauled. Remember how disastrously FEMA performed following Hurricane Katrina in 2005? After it was over, the agency, embarrassed by its performance, worked to right itself — and did so with very little additional funding. The coronavirus crisis is the CDC’s Katrina.
Invoking the Defense Production Act should be a priority, not a last resort.
What makes no sense is using the DPA the way Trump has — as a means of embarrassing and punishing companies he’s annoyed with.
Industry needs to be involved in federal pandemic planning.
Logistics matter.
There can only be one person in charge. And that person shouldn’t be the president. Yes, have a task force, but it should only consist of leaders with genuine expertise — in infectious diseases, logistics, manufacturing, communication and so on. The person in change needs to be an expert in managing disasters.

A Gilead Sciences Inc. experimental drug for patients with severe Covid-19 infections showed promise in an early analysis, raising tentative hope that the first treatment may be on the horizon.
The report in the New England Journal of Medicine tracked 53 people in the U.S., Europe and Canada who needed respiratory support -- half on mechanical ventilation and four on a heart-lung by-pass machine. All got remdesivir for up to 10 days under a program that lets people use unapproved medicines when no other options are available.
Over 18 days, 68% of patients improved, with 17 of the 30 patients on mechanical ventilation being able to get off the device. Almost half the patients studied were ultimately discharged, while 13% died.

China’s central metropolis Wuhan opened its doors to the outside world just after midnight Wednesday, ending a 76-day lockdown to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
A team of Caixin reporters — Gao Yu, Xiao Hui, Ding Gang and Bao Zhiming — stayed behind as the city was cut off Jan. 23 to document the desperate battle against the virus. They produced story after story showing what life was really like in Wuhan and what really happened.
A memo from Peter Navarro said failure to contain a coronavirus outbreak could lead to hundreds of thousands of deaths and trillions of dollars in economic losses. It is the most direct warning known to have circulated at a key moment among top administration officials.

The spectacle of New York without New Yorkers is the result of a communal pact. We know that life now depends on our withdrawal from the city.

What’s being applauded at seven is the courage of professionals, many of them working without the protective gear they need. Some have seen their salaries cut; some have fallen ill, others soon will. We’re applauding the likes of Anthony Fauci, who must spend nearly as much mental energy trying to finesse the ignorance and the ego of his Commander-in-Chief as he does in assessing the course of the novel coronavirus. We’re cheering researchers in labs all over the world who are at work on antivirals and potential vaccines. We’re cheering everyone who makes it possible for the city to avoid the myriad conceivable shortfalls and collapses: grocery clerks and ambulance drivers; sanitation workers; pharmacists and mail carriers; truckers, cops, and firemen; the deliveryman who shrugs off the straps of his knapsack and jabs the intercom buzzer with a gloved finger; the community of artists, dancers, d.j.s, musicians, and actors who have lost paychecks and jobs but are posting paintings on Instagram, FaceTiming soliloquies, singing into iPhones. And we’re thanking those who are providing straight information, lobbying Washington for medical supplies, looking out for the most vulnerable among us, and making critical decisions based on the scientific evidence, no matter how unforgiving. We know the limits of this release—there is a feeling of helplessness reflected in it, too––but it’s what we have in a dark time.
New Jersey and Connecticut also had one-day highs in coronavirus-related deaths. Officials in the three states still saw reason for hope.

the news coming from China since January 11, 2020 was never positive even if the actual reported statistical data was suspect.
everyone, including everyone in China, has a right to be angry about COVID-19.

Analysts finally came to the realization that the coronavirus/COVID-19 was going to impact the global economy the during last week of February. What took them so long?? = They all have more information then me. Moreover, the news coming from China since January 11, 2020 was never positive even if the actual reported statistical data was suspect. But the increased coronavirus/COVID-19 patients in China and new cases in Iran and South Korea finally turned on the ever-present ^VIX catalyst sparking the significant downturn/sell-off. All of this proving once again the power of big money players, and all highly leveraged in moving markets. Anyway, most people understand enough of this to not go through it again. I have kept track of some news events on this BioHazard = COVID-19 at my site since January 11th 2020.
