Parts of Beijing are under lockdown to control the Chinese capital’s recent outbreaks of Covid-19. The city has confirmed 1,729 cases since April 22, 2022. Many shopping centres have turned off most of their lights and closed the majority of the shops inside in response to citywide orders to restrict activities in a bid to stop the spread of the virus. The only venues allowed to remain open are supermarkets and restaurants that can provide home delivery. Both production and consumption in China have been hit hard by the stringent rules meant to fight the disease.

Taiwan posted a new daily record of Covid-19 cases on May 18, 2022, as the island undergoes its second coronavirus wave that started in early April, sparked by the highly transmissible Omicron variant. The island’s health ministry records 225 deaths in the past week and acknowledges the virus is spreading rapidly among some communities. Once one of the world’s last zero-Covid policy holdouts, Taiwan has since reversed its strategy to living with the virus and has been gradually relaxing Covid restrictions even as daily cases continue to rise. The self-ruled island said it aims to coexist with Covid, highlighting a pandemic policy difference with mainland China.

The UK and other European countries have reported a small number of human monkeypox infections, a virus rarely seen in Europe. The US, Canada and Australia are also investigating cases. Health services remain puzzled over how the virus is transmitted. Human monkeypox leads to skin irritations with pustules and blisters that eventually burst and then scab over, though they rarely leave scars. The infection is similar to normal pox (smallpox or variola). The cases registered in the United Kingdom have been reported as the West African strain, which is relatively mild compared to the Central African variant. The illness generally runs its course within three to four weeks. The West African strain is seldom deadly — and when it is, it's mostly in small children. As a precaution, Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has issued a warning for Germany, urging citizens to be vigilant.

Kim said medicine supplies were not being distributed to pharmacies in time because of "irresponsible work attitude'' and lack of organization, state media reported. He told the military commission to act "on immediately stabilizing the supply of medicines in Pyongyang City by involving the powerful forces of the military medical field of the People's Army," state media said.

Shanghai resident and Dutch journalist Jaap Grolleman says it is hard to tell when the city's strict lockdown will end as the authorities are "very set" on achieving a COVID zero target. The populous Chinese city of Shanghai has had its lockdown tightened just as restrictions were set to be eased in some regions. Multiple districts in the city were issued notices ordering residents not to leave their homes or receive deliveries for at least a week. Terrifying footage has also emerged showing suspected COVID-19 positive residents being forced from their homes to be taken to quarantine facilities. The videos which circulated through Chinese social media have since been removed from some platforms. Mr Grolleman told Sky News host Andrew Bolt the lockdown has curtailed people's freedoms – with some more unlucky than others. He said the current policy in China requires positive cases and close contacts to isolate in a government quarantine facility. "The two top rules are like if you get infected you have to go to the quarantine camp and also nobody's allowed to leave your compound or apartment," he said. "The rules are absolutely not flexible and sometimes there's no place for any feelings in this."

Growing frustration in China as two of its largest cities tighten curbs over unrelenting COVID-19 outbreaks. On May 9, Shanghai saw a rebound in symptomatic infections, with over 300 recorded. Hundreds of sub-districts now face harsher restrictions, as authorities implement what they call "static management". Under this new measure, a standstill order is implemented even for areas that have achieved China's so-called "societal zero-COVID" goal. Meanwhile, downtown Beijing is also at a standstill, with all public transport services halted in the capital's most populous Chaoyang district.

Residents have been banging pans and shouting from windows of their homes in protest against the government-enforced lockdown in Shanghai, China. The Chinese government has been pursuing a zero-Covid strategy since the beginning of the pandemic, with the aim of keeping the country entirely Covid free. Criticism of the government is rare in China, but some residents living in strict lockdown have said they have struggled to access food supplies. Others have been temporarily evacuated from their homes so they can be disinfected.

China has defended its "dynamic zero" COVID policy amid rising concerns of more outbreaks across the country. Top health officials have insisted the measures are in line with pursuing economic progress. Beijing is shutting more businesses while frustration grows in Shanghai over a month-long lockdown. A single case has prompted mass testing in Hangzhou and Guangzhou. China has identified nearly 15,700 new cases, mostly in Shanghai. However, some 12 million residents from lower-risk areas can now leave their homes.

Covid lockdowns in China remain the strategy to deal with outbreaks of cases, whereas the majority of other countries have scrapped most restrictions. Beijing authorities are trying to stamp out an outbreak with mass testing and avoid a repeat of the city-wide restrictions that have kept Shanghai in lockdown for a month. Despite the measures, on top of tightly-controlled Chinese social media, videos have emerged of protests against lockdowns, such as in Shanghai. Meanwhile, long queues outside supermarkets and shops were seen despite government assurances there is sufficient food. The BBC's Ros Atkins explains how the country decided on its approach.

Shanghai - China's most populous city and commercial hub - has been in a strict lockdown for about a month. Residents are only allowed to leave their homes in a few parts of the city. And while the port has been in operation, many exports are not leaving Shanghai because port workers and truck drivers, who transport the goods to and from the port are also affected by the lockdown. Right now, around a third of the 1,800 container ships stuck in the world, are in or around Shanghai. The city's hard lockdock is affecting global supply chains. Many companies, which produce in China, haven't been getting their goods and parts for nearly three weeks. It takes between 5 and 8 weeks for these container ships to make it from China to Germany so businesses here and elsewhere in Europe, are just starting to feel the problems. Meanwhile there's a plan underway to isolate dock workers, in an attempt to keep the Shanghai port operational.

Beijing has ordered mass coronavirus testing for nearly all of its 21 million residents. Only 70 cases have been found in China's capital since last Friday. Beijing health authorities insist the virus can still be brought under control. But the testing order has sparked panic buying of food and other basics over fears of a Shanghai-style lockdown. Shanghai authorities have gone out of their way to distribute millions of capsules of a drug, they claim, helps in the treatment of COVID-19. Lianhua Qingwen is a traditional Chinese medicine capsule that has been backed by the government as an important drug in the fight against COVID 19. Scientific evidence is still inconclusive on the effectiveness of such treatments. And now there is outrage over their distribution in a city, where many residents don't have access to food.
