There is no end in sight to China's zero-COVID strategy, even as public discontent reaches a fever pitch after almost three years of continuous lockdowns and disruptions to the economy. And despite authorities' efforts to stamp out the virus, new cases in recent weeks are on an upwards trend. Over the past 24 hours the number of daily cases hit a new record, with Beijing reporting more than 31,000 new cases nationwide on Thursday, the highest number since the pandemic began. In several cities, millions of people are being confined to their homes.

Protests over COVID-19 restrictions by workers at Foxconn's iPhone factory in central China were met with violence by security personnel, videos circulating on Chinese social media have shown. Workers at Foxconn's Zhengzhou factory held protests on the factory campus, where they have had to stay since a closed-loop system was announced to counter the spread of COVID-19 without compromising productivity. Videos of the violence in Zhengzhou showed masked people facing off police in protective suits. Some of the protesters are seen in the videos smashing surveillance cameras and windows on the campus. "The authorities have failed to prevent the news from spreading beyond Zhengzhou," said Patrick Poon, a visiting researcher at the Institute of Comparative Law At Meiji University in Japan. "It’s rare to see such strong actions by workers in recent years. I’m pretty sure the authorities would use more force to try to contain the situation. It’s concerning to imagine how much worse the will crackdown become as authorities try to censor relevant news about the protest in Zhengzhou."
It hopes to appease disgruntled new hires who played a central role in violent protests that rocked the world’s largest iPhone factory.
Zhengzhou will be largely locked down for five days.

Singles’ Day, the world’s biggest annual shopping festival, is a key barometer of Chinese retail demand. The lacklustre showing is being blamed on China’s strict Covid rules and a slowing economy.

Covid-19 infections have been rising sharply in China despite increasingly intense controls, testing and lockdowns. More than 8,000 cases were reported in the country on November 9, 2022. The southern city of Guangzhou saw daily case numbers increase from double digit figures in late October to over 2,000 within two weeks. With lockdowns being ordered in many cities, there is growing public discontent and doubts about whether the nation’s zero-Covid policy will work against the more infectious Omicron variant of the virus.

China is easing some of its toughest COVID-curbing restrictions. But it said it is sticking to zero-tolerance for the coronavirus. Key changes to the measures include reduced quarantine periods for close contacts of confirmed cases and inbound travellers. International flights into the country will also no longer be suspended. China is also adjusting its risk area classifications. High-risk areas will need to show five consecutive days of no new infections to be reclassified as low-risk. In addition, COVID-19 testing will now only be conducted in key spots where cases have been detected.
China eased pandemic controls, as the country’s leaders seek to lessen the pain of a stringent zero-Covid policy that has exacted a heavy economic toll.

If it seems like everyone around you is getting sick, you’re not imagining it. Flu season is hitting the United States unusually early and much harder than it usually does. Covid precautions led to much lower rates of flu-like illnesses compared to before the pandemic. But now that much of America has abandoned preventative measures such as masking, more people than before Covid are getting sick with seasonal illnesses. "I'm scared about what's going to happen this flu season because I don't think we've ever seen a coalition of multiple viruses kind of manifesting in this way before," said Dr. Elizabeth Clayborne, an emergency medicine doctor and associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. One of those flu-like illnesses is Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV, which is most severe in young children, the elderly and immune compromised individuals. There have been more reported cases of RSV in each week of October this year than any other week in the past two years. Doctors around the country are raising the alarm about hospitals being overwhelmed. Watch the video above to learn more about why this flu season is starting off with a surge and what we can do about it.

Long Covid is not just changing the lives of those affected, but it is proving to have a significant impact on the American labor force and economy. About a quarter of the roughly 16.3 million working-age Americans currently suffering from long Covid are out of work, and according to one estimate, long Covid could cost America as much as $3.7 trillion. Many of those suffering are either running out of disability insurance through their employers or getting denied Social Security Disability Insurance or SSDI - an effect that’s expected to be long-lasting. In December 2021, Congress allocated $1.15 billion to the National Institutes of Health to study the long term effects of the disease. But many experts are saying that is not nearly enough.

China is recording its highest number of COVID cases since April, with the southern port hub of Guangzhou under lockdown. However, authorities are also relaxing some quarantine and test rules for travelers. On Friday, Chinese disease control authorities said they would slightly relax quarantine rules for inbound travelers, even as authorities vow to maintain strict zero-COVID policies to combat outbreaks. Shutdowns of cities and factories continue to take a toll on the Chinese economy, which is growing slower than projected. The required quarantine time is reduced to eight days from ten, with five days in a state isolation center and the rest of the time at home. Arrivals will still be required to remain indoors during this period. Travelers will also only be required to show one negative COVID test within 48 hours of boarding flights to China. However, for foreigners, receiving a visa to enter China currently remains a complicated process. So-called "circuit breaker" mechanisms on inbound flights will be removed, under which flight routes had been temporarily shut down if a number of passengers tested positive. Within the country, those traveling from high- to low-risk areas will be allowed to quarantine at home, rather than at state facilities. Areas are defined as "low-risk" if they report zero new infections for five successive days. Contact tracing rules will also be eased. "Optimizing and adjusting prevention and control measures is not relaxing prevention and control... but to adapt to the new situation of epidemic prevention and control and the new characteristics of COVID-19 mutation," the National Health Commission (NHC) said. Authorities in China stepped up lockdowns in some cities after more than 10,500 new cases were reported nationwide on Friday — the highest count since April. At that time, the commercial hub of Shanghai, was battling a serious outbreak and was put under strict lockdown. Although the case count is fairly low compared to China's 1.4 billion population, authorities in China maintain a strict policy to quash outbreaks with snap lockdowns, mass testing, and mandatory quarantines. Guangzhou, a sprawling port city and a manufacturing hub in the south of China, is at the center of China's latest outbreak, with over 2,000 new COVID cases having been reported for four days straight. The district of Haizhu, with 1.8 million people at the heart of the city, declared a hard lockdown on Friday. "All residents are required to stay at home," the district government said in a statement. "Only one person in each household is allowed to buy daily necessities on a staggered schedule." Public transit in Haizhu has been suspended and mandatory PCR tests will be administered to "every household and every individual", the district government said. In the capital, Beijing, most of the city's 21 million residents are subjected to daily testing. And after 118 cases were reported on Friday, parks, shops and restaurants were closed, hospitals also reduced service and schools moved classes online. Under strict rules, people from cities that have reported a single case within seven days are barred from visiting Beijing.

Official UK government report on the debate https://hansard.parliament.uk/commons... Official UK Government YouTube channel, the debate in full for those interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfgGC... A few of John’s notes on immunity, from my books, free download site, http://159.69.48.3/ (You will need to cut and past this address into search engine) Acquired or adaptive immunity only develops after there has been contact with a particular antigen. An individual is said to be immune to a particular pathogen when it may be introduced into the body, without causing illness. In contrast to innate immunity, the immune system is changed as a result of exposure to a particular antigen. Acquired immunity is specific to a particular antigen. For example, previous exposure to the measles virus will have allowed the immune system to adapt, generating immunity to any future measles infection. However, because the response is specific, the individual may still suffer from mumps, influenza, or indeed any other antigenic organism it has not previously been exposed to. Antigens (antibody generators) An antigen is anything the immune system recognises as being foreign. When detected, antigens generate an immune response in the body. It is antigens which stimulate the production of antibodies, which are the immune proteins. Usually an antigen is a foreign protein that the body recognises as non-self. The outer coatings of bacteria and viruses contain such foreign proteins. Non-protein large molecules (with a molecular mass of over 1000) will also be antigenic if introduced into the body. So a wide variety of living and non living things can act as antigens; such things are said to possess antigenicity. The specific component of an antigen the immune system recognises as foreign is termed an epitope. Cells involved in adaptive immunity The important classification of white cells involved in adaptive immunity is the small lymphocytes. Small lymphocytes have a large nucleus with only a small area of cytoplasm. In addition to being found in the blood, there are many small lymphocytes in the structures of the lymphatic system, such as the spleen, tonsils and lymph nodes. Small lymphocytes are able to recognise antigenic material, this is essential if they are to mount an immune response. It is estimated that small lymphocytes are capable of producing 100 million different shapes of surface receptors in order to recognise 100 million different forms of antigen. This diversity seems to allow the immune system to recognise all of the possible antigens on the surface of the planet.

Workers were seen fleeing the world’s largest iPhone assembly factory in China after a Covid-19 outbreak was reported at the facility operated by Foxconn Technology Group. The company issued three notices about cases in the facility on October 30, 2022, and pledged to arrange safe passage for workers wishing to leave and a sanitised environment for those who choose to stay on. Many workers left on foot to avoid being stopped by strict Covid-19 control measures on public transport or at checkpoints in the city. Earlier there had been reports of complaints about poor living conditions after the company imposed strict measures meant to stop the spread of the virus.
