One year after the WHO has declared COVID-19 a pandemic, the EU's drugs regulator has approved the use of the Johnson & Johnson single-shot Covid-19 vaccine. The US-American drug is the fourth to get the go-ahead from the European Medicines Agency. The EMA said the vaccine is 67% effective two weeks after innoculation. It's already being widely used in the United States and it's hoped this will help speed up the EU's slow vaccine rollout, which has drawn heavy criticism. This news comes as several announce that they have stopped using some batches of the AstraZeneca Covid 19 vaccine -- after reports of blood clots in some people. Denmark has suspended use of the vaccine until the matter is cleared up.

The coronavirus has put inequality in the spotlight. Women are misrepresented in many industries and the pandemic's made that worse. Consultancy McKinsey says women are almost twice as likely as men to lose their job due to COVID. Women are less likely to be in full-time work and are more likely to be caregivers at home. Far fewer women work in science and engineering. That's despite girls often outpacing boys in school. Women are needed like never before, as the COVID death toll continues to rise. The crisis has wrecked relationships, families and lives. It's put back progress on many social fronts, including women's rights. We sent out our reporters to find out how some women around the world view COVID-19. And women provide the bulk of work as caregivers -- looking after the young, the old, and the sick. In Germany, most nurses are women -- and they often earn significantly less than their male colleagues.

The European Union has agreed to develop a COVID-19 vaccine passport that could ease border crossings, and allow people more freedom to travel again. EU leaders met for a virtual summit to discuss coordination. They're already under pressure over a lagging vaccine rollout. German Chancellor Angela Merkel says it will be at least three months before a vaccine passport system is up and running. With slow vaccinations, coronavirus Variants , border chaos and summer holidays at risk – there was no shortage of talking points at this virtual EU summit.During a four hour video call leaders tried to find a united way forward in the fight against the pandemic. The pressure is intense, concerns can't just be waved aside with the EU lagging behind on vaccination numbers and new variants spreading rapidly across the continent.Apart from ramping up vaccine manufacturing and easing production bottlenecks the EU will put more energy into detecting these more contagious and dangerous mutations through a dedicated program. With spring on its way tourism has made it back to the agenda. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was one of the first leaders to call for an EU-wide vaccination certificate in an attempt to ease travel restrictions and save the summer holiday season. That’s something all leaders could get behind. But how and when exactly this - vaccine passport - could be rolled out is uncertain. But for the moment, member states have agreed that tourism and all non-essential travel is not an option.

As it spreads, it's mutating, taking on new characteristics, that can make it harder to fight. New variants found in South Africa and the UK are more contagious - straining health services. Japan is trying to isolate a new variant from Brazil. There's no proof any of them are any deadlier, but the virus is constantly changing, and could eventually make vaccines less effective. South Africa just became the first African nation to surpass the 1 million mark for coronavirus cases, authorities worry about the spread of the new and potentially highly contagious variant detected in the country.

Four more months, and then everything goes back to the way it was. At least that's the plan in the UK, where Prime Minister Boris Johnson is plotting a way out of lockdown -- he wants to lift all restrictions by the summer. No more lockdown in Israel too, where large parts of the economy opened for business last weekend. Israelis can gradually go back to normal life. The government is issuing a "Green pass" app to anyone who has been vaccinated twice. The two nations can relax a little, due to successful vaccination drives. It's a bet on the future. A bet they can only win, if vaccines are effective against mutations.

China has responded with anger to allegations from the US that it withheld information about the origins of the COVID-19 outbreak last year. Beijing said Washington had quote 'already gravely damaged international cooperation on COVID- 19' and was now 'pointing fingers at other countries.' The comments come as the US said it had 'deep concerns' about China's handling of a WHO mission investigating the origins of the pandemic in the central city of Wuhan. The WHO team is expected to present their findings as early as this week. Several members of the team said they were happy with the access to information provided by China. But others including Australian microbiologist, Dominic Dwyer said China refused to give then RAW data on early COVID cases and that this could complicate efforts to understand how the outbreak began. With aspects of the WHO mission to China still unclear, the uncertainty over the origins of the coronavirus are compounded by a deliberate disinformation campaign by China.

Researchers have been working tirelessly to find an effective treatment for people with COVID-19. Vaccines are stealing the headlines and the financing. That's the main complaint of scientists in search of a COVID therapy. Treatments are still elusive, despite hundreds of drugs being developed or repurposed. But thousands of people are dying from the disease every day. Preventing it from killing people is vital. But doing so can take many forms. Here's a look at the most promising medications being tested.

EMA has received an application for conditional marketing authorisation (CMA) for a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Janssen-Cilag International N.V.
EMA’s human medicines committee (CHMP) will assess the vaccine, known as COVID-19 Vaccine Janssen, under an accelerated timetable. The Committee could issue an opinion by the middle of March 2021, provided the company’s data on the vaccine’s efficacy, safety and quality are sufficiently comprehensive and robust.
